The 10th Annual Ironman Lake Placid—one big swim!

July 21, 2008

The big winner of the 10th Annual Ironman Lake Placid Sunday was the rain—more than 3 inches fell pretty much constantly from soon after the race’s start until the finish after dark.

Pro's Francisco Pontano of Spain was the overall winner of the rain soaked race in 8:43:42 and Caitlin Snow (formally Shea-Kenney, she got married on Friday!) of Brockton, MA was the first women's finisher in 9:51:00.  She also set a record by being the first women ever to run the fastest marathon time of the day during an Ironman - 2:59:55!

Forty Mainers finished the 2.4-mile swim, the 112-mile bike and the 26.2-mile run, including Team Nor’Easter’s Soozie Large of Portland who, in her first Ironman, took an awesome fifth and podium spot in the women’s 55-59 age group with a time of 14:45:21.

Thomas Hedstrom, 33 of  Camden, was the fastest Mainer finishing 41st overall in a field of more than 2,000. His time was 9:57:51. Coming in eighth in the men’s 30-34 age group, Hedstrom qualified for the Ironman World Championships at Kona, Hawaii. Peter Sedgwick, 38 of North Yarmouth rocked with a 61st place finish and a time of 10:05:17. Ninth in the men’s 35-39 age group, he also qualified for Kona. Amy Sedgwick, 35 of North Yarmouth put in a great performance with a time of 11:30:32. She was 12th in the women’s 35-39 age group. Owen Lisa, 31 of North Yarmouth, placed 30th in of a field of 238 men in the 30-34 age group in 10:38:13.

Our own Rob Smith, 50 of Cumberland, a nine time Ironman finisher and former Kona qualifier finished 10th in the Men’s 50-54 age group in 10:58:06.

Cheryl Herbert, 38 of South Portland, also with Team Nor’Easter placed in the top fourth of the women’s 35-39 age group, coming in at 12:26:53.

First time Ironman Dave Brackett, 38 of Westbrook, flew in with a time of 11:45:19. He made it look easy. Fellow team member and Dave’s training partner Bob Turner, 38 of Windham, wasn’t so lucky. Turner, who had been on track for a devastatingly fast time that would have easily bested his performance at Placid two years ago, developed the flu and a fever the night before. Looking really, really, really awful, he showed up for the swim, managed both laps in Mirror Lake, but that was it. A crushing development for all of us.

Congrats to ALL that braved one of the most brutal Ironman weather days in the history of the sport!
