Defending champ Kibet back at the B2B.
July 23, 2008Kenyan Duncan Kibet will seek to defend his title at this year’s TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon (B2B) 10K on Aug. 2 against a fast and formidable field.
He’ll be going up against two former (B2B) champions—fellow Kenyan’s Gilbert Okari and Tom Nyariki, as well as Ethiopian Terefe Maregu, the current terror on the road race circuit. Okari has won the B2B three times and holds the course record set at 27:28. In 2006 he lost to former Olympian Nyariki, and it still hurts. Others in the deep field include Kenyan John Korir, who has won numerous major road races, and Ethiopian Dejene Berhanu, who finished fifth in the 5,000 m distance at the 2004 Olympics.
Three women ranked in the top 25 in the world are expected to try and break the 31:26 minute course record. They are Kenyans Lineth Chepkurui and Millicent Gathoni and Ethiopian Ayaleew Yimer. Expect to see Romania Andrea Pirtea, runner up at last year’s Chicago marathon, and 2004 U.S. Olympian Elva Dryer try and catch them.
In addition to a group of 30 world-class athletes, the best runners in Maine and thousands of others will be taking part in the 11th running of what has become one of the most popular 10Ks in the country.
