Caiazzo and Bancroft win the Scarborough Triathlon.

July 14, 2008

Update - draft story was launched earlier online today.  Below is the updated, final version - sorry for any confusion.

Mike Caiazzo of Westbrook simply blew the field away Sunday, winning the Scarborough Triathlon in 59:48:35 about six minutes ahead of his nearest competitor.  Caiazzo was first overall in the bike, averaging 24.8 mph on the 15-mile course and first overall in the three-mile trail run through the marshes of Scarborough, averaging  4:47 per mile. (There was some doubt as to whether the run distance was really three miles. All the run times were seriously fast.)

Angela Bancroft of Paris won the women’s overall with a time of 1:10:30.

Tommy McWalters of Thorndike took second overall with a time of 1:05:55. Daniel Jackson of Cape Elizabeth was third completing the course in 1:06:21.   In the women’s overall Catharine Payson of Cape Elizabeth finished second in 1:11:08, and Alison VanZandbergen of Falmouth placed third in 1:13:47.

Kelly Prout of Freeport was first over all in the 1/3-mile ocean swim finishing in 5:28, in spite of big swells that caused problems for some of the approximately 300 athletes competing.
