Oscar Galindez of Argentina and Lisa Bentley of Canada won the inaugural Amica Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island Sunday. Galindez, the three-time Ironman Brazil Champion and second in last year’s Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3 won with a time of 3:54:04. Bentley, who has won numerous Championships finished in 4:27:50
Charlie Carter, 29 of Portland, finished first among Mainers with a time of 4:44:23 and in 82nd place overall. David Painter, 46 of Bar Harbor, was second in a time of 4:59:05 (171st place). Stephen Wall, 22 of Caribou was third in 5:02:57 and Cameron Mitchell, 43 of Boothbay Harbor was fourth in 5:03:56.
Other Mainers who took part were Shawn Berry, 27 of Caribou in 5:05:38; Jeff Martin, 37 of Portland in 5:22:07; Mary Dudzik, 45 of Bar Harbor in 5:47:17; Lauren Trocchio, 28 of Portland in 5:56:30; Bonnie Hart, 27 of Portland in 6:38:32; and Chad Hart, 27 of Portland in 6:38:55;
More than 1,260 athletes from all over the country and Canada took part in the event which includes a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile run. The weather was perfecto—70 degrees at the swim start and 83 degrees with a light wind for the run.
The swim was held in the protected waters off Roger Wheeler State Beach in Narragansett. After a bike through scenic communities, the run finishes in downtown Providence.
So far, no Ironman 70.3 Maine.
