41 Mainers on the road to Ironman LP.

July 7, 2008

With an international field limited to a little more than 2,000 racers, 41 Mainers signed up to compete in this year’s Ironman USA Lake Placid, New York, on July 20.

That in itself is a feat, considering last year online registration closed within a couple of minutes. Only 800 spots were available online after a record number of athletes signed up on-site earlier in the day. Last year it was still possible to sign up yourself and a friend on site, and people waited in line for hours in order to secure slots. This year, no more signing up friends.

The Ironman is the most internationally renowned race of its kind, drawing people from all over the world for the chance to swim 2.4 miles, then bike 112 miles, then run a marathon (26.2 miles)

Other Ironman races are held each year in Tempe, Arizona; Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Panama City Beach, Floridal; Louisville, Kentucky; and Madison, Wisconsin.

As one Ironman scribe once wrote, there are probably more people who talk to cheese than do an Ironman.

Athletes have been training long and hard for the chance. Rob Smith, who has competed in eight Ironman races hopes once again to secure a qualifying spot at the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Kona. He says race day is the day you celebrate your training. Of course, he adds, it’s also a day you race.
