Hemphill and Barry win the L. L. Bean 10K.
July 4, 2008The hometown guy – Ethan Hemphill, 35 of Freeport – won Friday’s L. L. Bean 10K in 32:15. His time was 18 seconds faster than last year and almost 50 seconds faster than the year before.
Kristin Barry, 34 of Scarborough, won the women’s overall in 35:12. Last year Emily Levan of Wiscasset, won in 36:15.
More than 900 runners took part, a jump of more than 200 over last year’s field.
Matt Lane, 30 of Yarmouth, took second overall with a time of 32:51. Michael Payson, 45 of Falmouth, took third in 33:12.
In the overall women’s division, Sheri Piers, 37 of Falmouth, was second in 36:18 and the hometown gal - Joan Samuelson, 51 of Freeport, took third in 37:05.
T.C. and Kathryn Hazzard, 47 and 35 of Freeport, both finished in 47:06. Unlike many other local Fourth races, this one was run predominately by locals.
Local age group winners include Fiona Hendry, 14 of South Portland, in the Female 14-and-Under (43:41); Abby Samuelson, 20 of Freeport, in the Female 20-24 (42:33); Ian London, 23 of Topsham, in the Male 20-24 (33:25); Blaine Moore, 28 of Portland, in the Male 25-29 (35:53); Matt Lane, 30 of Yarmouth, in the Male 30-34 (32:51); Sheri Piers, 37 of Falmouth, in the Female 35-39 (36:18); Marjorie Graff, 40 of Portland, in the Female 40-44 (39:47): Byrne Decker, 41 of Yarmouth, in the Male 40-44 (35:13); Karen Mokarzel, 45 of Falmouth, in the Female 45-49 (45:42); David Roberts, 53 of Cape Elizabeth, in the Male 50-54 (38:10); John Mollica, 55 of Cumberland, the in Male 55-59 (39:26); Jane Bradley, 60 of Freeport, in the Female 60-64 (56:26); James Toulouse, 60 of Cape Elizabeth, in the Male 60-64 (42:30); Gretchen Read, 65 of Portland, in the Female 65-69 (47:49); and Polly Kenniston, 71 of Scarborough, in the Female 70-and-Over (56:29).
Special mention to Elie Leonard, 6 of South Hamilton, Massachusetts for his 8th place win in the Male 14-and-Under category (1:18:25).
