Maine women shine at Mooseman International.
June 8, 2008There were 27 Mainers among the more than 700 triathletes competing in Saturday’s Mooseman International, and they did an awesome job. Maine women did especially well, taking second and third in the women’s overall. Also winning their age groups.
Katie Payson, 43 of Cape Elizabeth, won second with a time of 2:17:12, and Angela Bancroft, 38 of Paris, was third with a 2:17:55 finish. The race, one of the most popular tri weekends in New England, was held at Wellington State Park in Bristol, New Hampshire.
Alison Vanzandbergen, 35 of Falmouth and fifth overall women, had the second fastest women's bike split of the day, averaging 21mph on the hilly course. Mary Lou Lowrie, 57 of New Gloucester, won her age group in a time of 2:35:39.
Scott Marr, 43 of Falmouth, came in sixth overall in 2:06:31. Robert Straznitiskas, 39 of Farmington, finished eighth in 2:06:56. Steve Tenney, 40 of Falmouth, was 13th finishing in 2:10:06. Rick Durgin, 36 of Westbrook, took first overall in the Clydesdale category in a time of 2:15:15.
The race was won by Ryan Kelly, 27 of Concord, New Hampshire with a time of 1:58:15 in the men’s overall and by Kathleen Pallardy, 23 of New York City in 2:15:15.
As is often the case, the weather was cool and foggy (delaying the swim start and shortening the overall distance to about 6/10 of a mile) in the early AM, with temperatures in the 50s and rainy. Just the same, by weekend’s end more than 1,800 athletes will have raced this weekend that culminates in today’s Half Ironman. Today is expected to be hot, with temperatures in the high 80s with a chance of isolated thunderstorms.
Here are the international race results of all competing Mainers. Tomorrow, we plan to post the half ironman distance Mooseman race results:
