Peak Performance Multisport in Portland will be the new title sponsor of the Maine Time Trial (TT) series of bike races, announced Jeff Miller, executive director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine.
The series will be known as 2008 Peak Performance MAINE Time Trials presented by Aegis Racing Bikes and will feature 12 races from Presque Isle to Mount Agamenticus and Fryeburg to Bar Harbor.
A new race in Freeport, part of L.L. Bean’s Bike Expo weekend, will kick off the series on May 4 (see accompanying list below). Also new in 2008: a new scoring system that weighs participation as well as performance.
Miller says Peak Performance Multisport will help attract new riders to participate. The individual race and series prize packages will be bigger (two of the prizes will be a man’s and woman’s bike frame donated by Aegis Bicycles of Camden, Maine). Peak’s high profile in the community will introduce time trial racing to a whole new group of cyclists, many who are just coming to the sport, said Miller. There are no prerequisites to race, and time trials are a great way for those new to racing to get involved. “All you need is a bike and a helmet,” said Miller.
“It is a perfect fit, said Tim Brewer owner of Peak Performance Multisport. “We are the largest provider of time trial bikes, equipment and services in the state and many on our Team Nor’Easter and staff compete in time trials, so there was that extra incentive to jump in and help evolve the series.”
According to Miller, time trials are “user-friendly races” where individuals work as hard to beat the clock as they do other racers. Participants leave the starting line at 30-second intervals and no drafting is allowed. The race distances are anywhere from 12 to 20 miles.
“The series is such a great event. Whether it’s your first time trial or you’re very experienced, time trials give everyone a chance to have fun together,” said Miller. He said another great and inclusive thing about the TT series is it takes place across the state. “It’s easy for anyone to get out and race,” said Miller.
