Nearly 100 women take part in Peak’s Tri For A Cure ocean swim clinic.
July 15, 2008Organized by Tri for a Cure race committee members, we recently held a "swim-the-course" clinic at Spring Point Head Light in South Portland, site of the 1/3-mile swim course for the all women’s Tri For A Cure sprint triathlon on August 9. Nearly 100 women who have registered for the race showed up!
Peak Performance’s Rob Smith talked about open water ocean swimming, offering tips and techniques. For first time triathletes, swimming is often the most daunting of the three legs. Concerns include water temperature, getting a wetsuit on, the initial constrictive feeling of a wetsuit, swimming in a large group and sighting.
Our support instructors had established the course using GPS coordinates and set out buoys to mark the way. At the water’s edge the women self-seeded themselves, with the strongest swimmers starting first. Then instructors launched a T-2:00-minute countdown to simulate a race start. There were seven kayakers on hand to lead the women around the course.
It was an amazing event! All the women who finished the swim stayed on the beach until the last person came out of the water.....all loudly cheering for each person making land fall. Many of the women biked or ran portions of the course after the swim.
Congrats to all that attended the swim and GOOD LUCK race day!
