Community Bike Ride for a great cause.
May 14, 2008The Bike Shop's Second Annual Community Ride has a new component this year – the Portland Bike Expo – and will be held on June 29 at Payson Park in Portland.
“Last year's ride drew about 70 riders with very little planning or promotion,” said Matt Velguth of the The Bike Shop. “Riders had a great time and wanted that to continue: they felt that there ought to be something going on at the end; so, we responded.”
This year, Matt said. The Bike Shop is hoping for a turnout of several hundred.
The the routes remain the same. There will be three rides: a 50-miler starting at 9 a.m.; a 25-miler starting at 10 a.m.; and a four-mile kid- and family-friendly loop around Back Bay that starts at 11 a.m. The 25- and 50-mile routes are overlapping figure 8s to ensure that anyone who finds they've taken on more than they might want to chew can opt for a shorter ride mid-stream and continue to enjoy the day.
At least four of local bike shops – Peak Performance, Gorham Bike and Ski, Back Bay Cycle and Eastern Mountain Sports – will be on hand. There also will be club representatives from SMCC, CCCP, Nor'Easter, CBBC and PVC.
This is an opportunity to learn about club rides and schedules and to find out what's new in the world of cycling hardware. The event also raises money for The Bike Shop, a non-profit program that helps about 500 kids from Portland's financially distressed neighborhoods pursue healthy, responsible and independent lives through bicycling.
Registration is $25 per adult. Kids under 12 are free.
We are a proud sponsor and supporter of the work Matt is doing with The Bike Shop. We hope you can take the time to check them out and all the wonderful things they provide to local kids!
